The Beat Goes On: Afro-Cuban Music and Its Impact on the United States

The Wolfsonian's Turn the Beat Around exhibition explores how Afro-Cuban genres like rumba, mambo, and cha-cha-cha made lasting contributions to U.S. music and dance. Dig deeper into this topic at an on-campus panel with three experts! Panelists will examine how tourism and Hollywood movies first acquainted American audiences with Afro-Cuban music, how the salsa movement was controversially received in Cuba during the 1960s and '70s, and how Afro-Cuban rhythms fit within Miami's diverse musical cultures. This discussion will celebrate the origins, diffusion, and vibrancy of musical practices of African origin in both Cuba and the United States.
