The Wolfsonian's Turn the Beat Around exhibition explores how Afro-Cuban genres like rumba, mambo, and cha-cha-cha made lasting contributions to U.S. music and dance. Dig deeper into this topic at an on-campus panel with three experts! Panelists will examine how tourism and Hollywood movies first acquainted American audiences with Afro-Cuban music, how the salsa movement was controversially received in Cuba during the 1960s and '70s, and how Afro-Cuban rhythms fit within Miami's diverse musical cultures. This discussion will celebrate the origins, diffusion, and vibrancy of musical practices of African origin in both Cuba and the United States.

Organized by the FIU Cuban Research Institute. Co-sponsored by The Wolfsonian–FIU, the Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum, and The Wolfsonian Public Humanities Lab.
