Past School Programs

Working with teachers and students has been at the heart of The Wolfsonian for over 20 years! Here's a snapshot at what we've accomplished:

STEAM ESE

2019–20, developed with the Miami-Dade County Public Schools Department of Exceptional Student Education (ESE)

A course tailored to the needs of students on the autism spectrum, with lessons focusing on items in the museum's teaching collection that can be freely touched, held, and manipulated

Teen Thoughts on Democracy

2012–14, supported by the Rockefeller Foundation

A curriculum designed to engage teens in exploring freedom of expression and the acts that often threaten it: intolerance and intimidation, media manipulation and spin, and the strategies of persuasion used in propaganda

Page at a Time

1995–2013, supported by the State of Florida Division of Cultural Affairs, Miami-Dade County Public Schools, the Florida Arts Council, and the Carnival Foundation

An interdisciplinary learning experience incorporating language arts, social studies, and visual arts to teach students in grades 5 and 6 about the power of words and images through the creation of unique, handmade books

Shenandoah Middle Museums Magnet Program

2004–08, supported by the U.S. Department of Education Magnet Schools Assistance Program

A special school-wide educational initiative offering integrated museum and cultural experiences to students eligible to attend Miami-Dade County Public Schools

Artful Citizenship

2002–07, supported by the U.S. Department of Education

A program for students in grades 3–5 that taught them to "read" images to enhance their analytical skills and improve understanding of the role that images and symbols play in daily life

Artful Truth

1998–2001, supported by the Florida Tobacco Pilot Program

A curriculum utilizing media arts to promote visual literacy in grades 4–6 and encourage students to be more sensitive to tobacco advertising
