STEAM

We're shaping the next generation of makers and problem solvers!

The Wolfsonian's STEAM programs are museum field trips that use art and design to introduce K–12 classrooms to drafting, geography, biology, geometry, ecology, algebra, and more. In partnership with Miami-Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS), each STEAM curriculum hones students' observational, critical thinking, analytical, and communication skills to boost knowledge of STEAM fields—Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math.

Classes engage with the Wolfsonian collection through close looking and tactile learning. Alone or in groups, students spot technological and design details and imagine how objects were used, where, and by whom. Principles of perspective, scale, volume, and angles help kids formulate three-dimensional understanding of objects and think about improvements for today and tomorrow.

By the end of each STEAM course, students emerge energized and better prepared to take on the challenges of our future.

  • STEAM x Design

    This program for students in Grades 68 addresses elements of STEAM through the lens of design. During a one-day field trip, students tour the Wolfsonian galleries and learn how to understand objects in their context, analyzing representation, materials, and how they were made. Then, classes participate in a hands-on STEAM-integrated workshop inspired by the collection with guidance from a museum educator.

    STEAM X Design is offered to 10 MDCPS classrooms annually. There is no charge to participating schools and The Wolfsonian will cover transportation and supply costs. 

    MDCPS teachers may apply by completing a STEAM x Design Program Request Form. Title I classrooms receive priority.

    SxD is part of The Wolfsonian's Discovering Design initiative, which is supported by The Batchelor Foundation, the Tamara Harris Foundation, the Seligman Family Foundation, and the Lutron Foundation.
  • STEAM Zines

    STEAM Zines is a self-directed program designed for classrooms in Grades 37 to explore environmental responsibility and self-expression. Students conduct research on current-day issues like sea-level rise and greenhouse gases and present their solutions in zines—handmade magazines that combine language and visual arts. Participants will learn about science, gain confidence in voicing their opinions, and think proactively.

    The Wolfsonian provides teachers with videos and PDFs that guide students in completing their projects. Required art supplies include white and colored paper, scissors, Elmer's school glue or glue sticks, and colored pencils or markers.

    MDCPS teachers may apply by completing a STEAM Zines Virtual Program Request Form. Title I classrooms receive priority.

    STEAM Zines is part of The Wolfsonian's Discovering Design initiative and is supported by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, The Batchelor Foundation, the Tamara Harris Foundation, the Seligman Family Foundation, and the Lutron Foundation.

  • STEAM+

    Funded by the City of Miami Beach, STEAM+ integrates high-quality visual and performing arts into science and math classes as part of MDCPS's STEAM initiative. The Wolfsonian program is geared toward students in Grades 3–7 and addresses elements of STEAM through a series of creative interactions focused on the art of printmaking. The program includes a field trip to The Wolfsonian and three classroom visits where students learn to design printmaking tools and create their own collection-inspired prints with guidance from a museum educator.

    The STEAM+ program is offered in seven Miami Beach public schools: Biscayne Beach Elementary, Fienberg-Fisher K8 Center, Miami Beach Senior High, Miami Beach Nautilus Middle, North Beach Elementary, South Pointe Elementary, and Treasure Island Elementary. Schools are selected to participate by The Bass Museum of Art, which administers the program annually.

The Wolfsonian's STEAM programs meet CPalms State of Florida Educational Standards, are free to participating schools, and can be used towards MDCPS STE(A)M Designation.
