The Wolfsonian–Florida International University seeks a motivated and community-oriented aspiring museum professional for an 11-month fellowship, housed within the Content + Interpretation department, supported by a grant from the Samuel H. Kress Foundation. This position offers an exciting opportunity to advance the museum's ongoing efforts to develop inclusive, accessible, and audience-centered interpretive strategies for its vast collection of fine and decorative art and material culture.
The Fellow's core responsibility will be to contribute to the reinterpretation of permanent collection objects on view, a multi-phase project that includes conducting primary and secondary research, updating object records, and co-developing interpretive content—including wall labels, an audio guide, and museum tours—with an emphasis on clarity, relevance, and visitor engagement.
Responsibilities
- Conducts audits of existing interpretive labels and performs in-depth research on collection objects.
- Researches and proposes alternative interpretive strategies and label formats that emphasize accessibility and audience engagement.
- Collaborates with staff across departments to draft, refine, and test interpretive content using visitor research and evaluation tools (e.g., intercepts, surveys).
- Assists in the development of an audio tour featuring interpretation of permanent collection objects, including scripting and coordination of narration.
- Leads public tours of the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions.
- Supports the planning and facilitation of public programs and guided group visits.
- Participates in cross-departmental committees that contribute to institutional access initiatives.
- Assists with the creation and review of digital interpretive content (e.g., written, video, and audio content for web and social media).
Desired Qualifications
- Bachelor’s in art history or a related discipline, such as art education, museum studies, or history.
- Previous experience working in a museum environment is desirable.
Salary
$27 hourly
