WPA: An ABC of Home Remedies for Depression
June 1–September 1, 2000
The Wolfsonian–FIU @ 1001 Washington Avenue
In the wake of the Great Depression that followed the Stock Market Crash of 1929, Franklin Delano Roosevelt won the presidency by promising the country a “New Deal” for the “forgotten man.” His ambitious plan was advanced through work-relief programs that created jobs for citizens in all sectors of the economy. Between 1933 and 1943, federal tax dollars sponsored a wide variety of programs, from public works to visual arts.
The works displayed in WPA, an installation developed by The Wolfsonian Library, were largely produced by artists and writers employed by the federal government to document the social and economic problems and their New-Deal solutions.
