You, Me, We, Us: Solidarity in AIDS Graphic Design
December 3, 2020–September 5, 2021
The Wolfsonian–FIU @ 1001 Washington Avenue
As people around the world coped with the COVID-19 pandemic, graphic design played an important role in sharing information and urging people to support one another. Forty years earlier, the HIV/AIDS crisis prompted a similar generative period in poster design. Drawn from The Wolfsonian's collection of over 2,000 HIV/AIDS posters generously donated to the museum by Henry S. Hacker, this installation focused on examples that express solidarity across boundaries of race, sex, and nationality. Now decades old, these posters still serve as blueprints for visual communication that calls for empathy and community in the face of a global health crisis.
