Among the first films banned from release by the Nazis upon taking power in 1933, Fritz Lang's The Testament of Dr. Mabuse offers a fascinating view of fissures in German culture and society on the eve of the Third Reich. On one level, Lang's film is a bizarre thriller and detective story, narrating a violent crime spree inspired by the writings of the (fictitious) demonic hypnotist, Dr. Mabuse. On another, it exposes the sinister forces threatening German society by associating ideas and terror tactics of the Nazis with the villain. Arrive by 6:30pm for a reception and brief talk by chief curator Silvia Barisione about Wolfsonian collection items from this period in Germany, and stay for the film at 7pm.

Co-organized by the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany.
