The Wolfsonian–FIU @ 1001 Washington Avenue

Roberto Lugo's Street Shrines honored personal heroes and family members in a way once reserved for kings and generals. In that spirit, we invited a remarkable group of artists from Everglades Correctional Institute to create their own commemorative artworks modeled after the designs in Lugo's mural on the Wolfsonian facade. Created with the support of ArtSouth and Exchange for Change, organizations that offer cultural and educational opportunities to people in prison, this installation offered a rare opportunity for community members to see and respond to the self-expression of incarcerated artists.
