In Small Things Remembered: Medallions, Poster Stamps, and Other Collectibles

Ongoing
The Wolfsonian–FIU @ 1001 Washington Avenue

What things do human beings choose to remember, and how do societies memorialize events and anniversaries? This installation combines rotating displays of mass-produced medallions, collecting cards, and perforated poster stamps from the late 19th and early 20th centuries with a digital interactive that allows visitors to zoom in and examine Beaux Arts, Art Nouveau, and Art Deco designs in minute detail. Together, they reveal the innovations in metal-making and printing techniques that made these commemorative items ideal instruments of complex political and social messaging.

In Small Things Remembered is on view in Knight Lab 4 and features works from the Wayne Dodge and Lawrence Kreisman Medallic Art and Poster Stamp Collection at The Wolfsonian–FIU. We thank Lawrence Kreisman for his generous support.
